Return to Freedom Project

The Return to Freedom Project is a pro bono legal organization that advocates for life-saving relief for individuals serving harsh prison sentences. Its goal is to free prisoners from the criminal justice system and promotes equal justice for all. NACDL was founded by criminal justice reform advocates and lawyers. It is a national organization with over 400 members lawyers. Among its many initiatives are the Excessive Sentence Project, the Trial Pencency Project, the Cannabis Justice Initiative, and other clemency initiatives.

Bill DeMayo, his mother and the Return to Freedom Project were inspired to start it in 1998 after they had visited a sanctuary for wild horses in Northern California. In their early 80s, they pooled their resources to purchase the rundown 300-acre ranch. In 1998, the American Wild Horse Sanctuary was established 60 miles north from Santa Barbara. The sanctuary now houses more than 1,200 wild horses. It also works with nature to improve the spirit of the people who visit it.

Report on indigent defense in U.S.

According to the GAO report, only five years ago federal dollars were allocated to indigent defense service jurisdictions. These jurisdictions had public defender offices and coordinated assign counsel/contract programs. These "systems" have significant obstacles to overcome before they can provide adequate services to indigent defendants. According to the report, Congress should increase federal funding for indigent defense. Legal aid funding must be increased by the state legislatures. Indiana and Pennsylvania should model their state supreme judges on how to direct unclaimed class-action award money towards legal aid. Federal actors can help to bridge the gap by increasing public awareness about federal grants and increasing congressional funding.

GAO's report also lists federal grant programs that provide support for indigent defense. Four DOJ grant programmes require funding for indigent defence, including the John R. Justice and Capital Case Litigation Initiative, Wrongful Conviction Review and Juvenile Indigent Defense Clearinghouse. The report compares these four programs to show how much funding is available for indigent defense throughout the country.

FAQ

Do all lawyers have to wear suits?

But not necessarily. Some people like to be casual while others prefer suits. Lawyers often dress casually. However, certain states require that lawyers dress in business attire.

What is the difference of a paralegal versus a legal assistant

Paralegals are trained to perform specific tasks such as typing, filing, or researching. Legal assistants may assist attorneys in preparing pleadings, drafting motions, or researching. Both types help attorneys to complete their work.

Which type is the best lawyer?

A lawyer professional will not hesitate to ask the client what they need. They are prepared to go beyond the call-of-duty to ensure that clients receive the best representation.

Because they know that winning these cases will mean no business, they will be willing to accept cases other lawyers wouldn't take on.

A legal professional knows how to negotiate and use their skills to get the best deal for their client.

An individual who is dedicated and committed to providing outstanding service and quality results. Someone who can think outside the box to find solutions that other people wouldn't.

Someone who is honest and ethical. An individual who adheres to the rules and regulations set forth by courts and government agencies.

A lawyer who is trustworthy and has a strong work ethic.

Which type of lawyer are you most in demand?

It is best to simply say there are two types. These are transactional and litigation lawyers. Transactional lawyers deal with contracts and business law. Lawyers who specialize in litigation deal with lawsuits. Lawyers who specialize in both areas are called generalists. The "Big Law" attorney is perhaps the best-known example. He or she practices at large firms, and is able to handle many different types cases. Generalists are either transactional lawyers or litigation attorneys.

All types of legal issues can be handled by transactional lawyers, including divorces, wills and trusts, real-estate transactions, employment agreements, and other matters. They often work on a basis of a contingency fee. That means they get paid only if their client wins the case. If the client loses, then the lawyer does not get paid. Because they have to pass trials to win cases, these lawyers are sometimes called "trial attorneys".

Litigation lawyers handle lawsuits. They may represent clients at administrative hearings or in courtrooms. Some litigators may also perform transactional work. For example, they could draft documents on behalf of their clients. A company can employ litigation lawyers to defend against a lawsuit brought against it by another firm. Or they may be hired by one person (the plaintiff) to sue another person (the defendant). Some litigation lawyers focus exclusively on personal injury claims. Others concentrate on commercial disputes. Others may practice family law.

Lawyers in litigation must be able to present evidence and argue before juries and judges. They must be familiar with civil procedure rules and other aspects of litigation law. They must be capable of researching and analyzing facts and issues. They must also be skilled negotiators.

How To

How can I find legal help for no cost?

Because there are many lawyers who want your business, it can be very difficult to find a pro-bono lawyer. There are several ways you can go about finding a pro bono attorney. Ask around at your local bar association or search online for a list pro bono attorneys. You may also check with your state bar association. Local law schools can help you find a probono attorney. Many law schools offer the opportunity for students to work with clients who are low-income to ensure that they have access to justice. If none of these options appeal to you, you might consider reaching out to a non-profit organization like Legal Services Corporation (LSC). LSC funds organizations across the country that provide free civil legal assistance to people living below the poverty line. The organization finances programs that help low income individuals with housing problems, child support enforcement matters, family law matters and consumer protection. In addition to providing financial assistance, LSC also advises and guides its grantees on how best to serve their clientele. Some services include:

  • Financial counseling
  • Assistance with filing bankruptcy
  • Family violence cases can be resolved by helping families
  • Representation before administrative bodies

If you're looking for a pro bono attorney, but aren't sure where to start, here are some things to keep in mind :

  • Don't waste your time trying to find a lawyer who specializes in your case type. Lawyers who work pro bono often represent clients from different backgrounds, so they may not have the experience to handle your specific case.
  • A lawyer with experience in representing clients of low income should be considered. This means the lawyer is familiar with how to effectively communicate with this population.
  • Ask if the lawyer is certified in your specific area. If you are dealing with landlord/tenant matters, make sure the lawyer you choose is experienced in handling these types of cases.
  • Ask if the lawyer is open to new clients. Some lawyers are limited to certain types of cases. This means that you may not find one who is willing to take on pro bono clients.
  • Lawyers who claim to be experts in a particular field of law should be avoided. Many lawyers state that they have specialized in other areas but are not knowledgeable about the subject.
  • Check that the lawyer has a good reputation. Ask family and friends for recommendations. Search online for reviews written by clients.
